Jan Ficenec 1832-1901 Jan (pronounced 'John') immigrated to the United States with his wife and their infant son John in 1863 from the little village of Kunčice, in the Hradec Kralove area of ancient Bohemia (what is now the northern and western two-thirds of the Czech Republic). After at least some time in Iowa, in which (according to the 1910 Census) several of their kids were born, they settled in Saunders County, Nebraska. Jan's son Frank sang in the church choir in Plasi, a small farm-town, so they must have been nearby. While there, they had six more kids that survived: three girls who married and moved off (we know nothing about them but their married names...), and three more boys. They had a total of twelve children, five that died, with his wife dying along with the child during the birth of their last. Jan remarried to Alzabeta (Americanized to 'Elizabeth'), a widow from Plasi whose 1st husband, Joseph Simanek, died in 1873. The couple managed the Saunders County's poor farm. In the 1880 Census, Jan & Elizabeth had Jan's sons John (21), Joseph (13), Frank (11) & Charles (6) living with them, as well as Elizabeth's daughters Carria (12), Antona (9) and Josey (6). è 1880 Census page from Nebraska Jan died of dropsy at age 69 in 1901. His son Frank's wife, Mary (Novotny) Ficenec told her daughter Ethel that on the day he died he asked for an extra Kolache for dinner, because he had to make a long trip - he died that afternoon. Elizabeth died in 1919 in Wahoo, NE.
