Obituary of John George Ficenec
Tuesday, January 26, 1943, brother John George Ficenec died after a short illness. He was born in a village named Koutnice, county of Hradec Králový, Bohemia, June 25, 1859. At his death he was nearly 85 years of age. He immigrated into this country with his parents at the age of 3 years. - The family settled on a farm at Plasi, Nebraska. About 65 years ago he settled in Omaha, where first he started as a painter and a paperhanger. He was very active in civic, parish, and society life. For sometime he was a member of the South Omaha School Board and Superintendent of the South Omaha City Hall since its erection, until his retirement in 1933. In the Assumption Parish he was the oldest charter member as well as a member of its first church committee, first secretary of the Beseda Corporation which owns the hall. He was a member of St. Joseph's Branch No. 37 of the Catholic Workman, and was also a member of the Western Bohemian Catholic Union Society No. 3, before the merger with the catholic Workman. In both organizations he held various offices; he was a delegate to the general convention in 1903 held in New Prague, Minn., and also attended the general conventions of the W. B. C. Union. Funeral services were held from the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church of South Omaha, Friday, January 28th. Reverend Albert Kreici officiated at the Requiem Mass. He was laid at rest in St. Mary's cemetery along side of his wife Katerina, who predeceased him 10 years ago. He is survived by three sons, our Supreme Treasurer, Joseph W.; John J.; and Frank C., and one daughter, Sister Mary Genevieve de Norte Dame, now teaching at the Holy Trinity Church, Brainard, Nebraska. Three brothers also survive: Frank, Oakes, N. D.; Joseph, Wahoo, and Charles, of Colon, Nebraska. 2 sisters: Frances Drozda, David City, and Mary Echtermeyer, Omaha, Nebraska, and fifteen grandchildren. - All the members belong to our Catholic Workman Association.
